The Dala Horse
The dala horse (aka Dalecarlian horse) is one of most charming of all traditions, and visitors to Lindsborg often have many questions about these beautifully carved, gaily colored little animals. This symbol of the city has even been adopted into the official logo of the city.
The original dala horse has likely been used for centuries, and it is thought to have been created by Swedish woodcutters. These woodcutters passed the long winter nights separated from their families by carving toys for their children, often in the shape of various horse breeds. It is from this carving tradition that the dala horse we know today was born.
The look of these toy horses is quite unique, and it is easily recognizable by its stocky build and lack of a tail. The originals were unpainted, but for many years now the dala horse has been painted in bright primary colors, increasing their charm and beauty in the process.
