Friesian horses are among the most instantly recognizable of breeds, and even a quick look will tell that a horse is of this noble bloodline. The Friesian horse originates in Friesland (in the northern Netherlands).

Average size: 15 to 16 hands

Friesian horses have a black coat and a long mane and tail. They also have feathers: long hair on the legs). There are 2 types of Friesian horses: the baroque and the sporthorse (finer variation).

Friesian horses have been seen everywhere from parades and circuses to some of our most beloved movies. In the middle ages Friesians were the favorite horses of the knights, because of their ability to carry them in full armour. In fact, Hollywood is responsible in large part for the popularity of Friesian horses, and some notable recent movies have featured these noble mounts in starring roles. For instance, did you know that Alexander the Great’s famous horse Bucephalus was a Friesian horse in the recent movie by Oliver Stone, or that Zorro has ridden Friesian horses in most of his various screen and television incarnations?

It is easy to understand why the Friesian horse is so popular in movies and on television. Friesian horses have a combination of beauty, charm and carriage that is unmatched in any other breed. And their striking black color makes them a standout in any crowd.
