The Missouri fox trotter is one of the most unique of all breeds of horse, and its gait, the fox trot, is both unmistakable and unforgettable. Missouri fox trotters travel in a diagonal pattern, performing the gait by walking in the front while trotting behind, reaching with each stride. Thanks to their gait Missouri fox trotters have a very comfortable ride.

Average size: 14 to 16 hands

The breed originated in Missouri, where it was used as a working horse, either on the ranch or for transportation.

The ideal Missouri fox trotter will travel with a true animation, and perform the true Fox Trot rhythm as it moves. The head of the Missouri fox trotter should nod, while the ears and tail also take up the rhythm of the distinctive gait. Missouri fox trotters should provide a consistent, smooth and springy gait, with no discernable up and down movement. The ideal gait for Missouri fox trotters is that of a smooth gliding gait. In addition to the famous Fox Trot gait, the Missouri fox trotter also performs a very rapid, flat footed walk and a wonderfully collected canter.

Missouri fox trotters are typified by their graceful, proportionate neck. The head of the horse is neat, and the horse should have a look of intelligence, with pointed ears, eyes which are large and bright and a well tapered muzzle. The Missouri fox trotter has a short and strong back and a deep and well ribbed body.
