The Thoroughbred

Arabian horses

A thoroughbred horse

When the average person thinks of the thoroughbred, it is natural to think first of the race track and the excitement of the Kentucky Derby and other high stakes horse races. While it is true that thoroughbred horses excel in racing, and that thoroughbred racing is one of the most popular sports around the world, there is much more to this breed
than meets the eye.

Average size: 16 hands

Thoroughbreds were developed in the 18th century in England and is a cross between English mares and Arabian stallions.

Thoroughbreds do far more than just run fast, and they are exceptional jumping and fox hunting horses as well. From the open fields of England to the big jumps of the show pen, thoroughbred horses have excelled in all types of equine sport.

In addition, the Thoroughbred can be an exceptional pleasure mount as well. The sturdiness, stamina and reliability of thoroughbred horses makes the breed as at home on the back trails as on the backstretch. The black thoroughbred is one of the most striking sights on the trail or in the show ring, and it is no wonder the breed is steadily growing in popularity among race fans and non-race fans alike.
